Deck & Fence Staining in Kennett Square, PA
Decks and fences take the worst of the weather. Summer sun dries out and grays the wood, and the freeze-thaw cycles of a Mid-Atlantic winter pull water into every crack. Stain is what keeps that water out and the color in, as long as it goes onto clean, dry wood.
Every job starts with cleaning off dirt, mildew and gray fibers, brightening the wood, and giving it time to dry out properly. Stain is worked into the boards, the rails and the end cuts where water gets in first, and it only goes on when the forecast gives it time to soak in and cure. The work is backed by our 1-year warranty.

Signs Your Deck or Fence Needs Stain
Gray, Weathered Wood
Sunlight breaks down the surface fibers and turns wood gray. Cleaning, brightening and fresh stain bring the color back.
Water Soaks In
If water darkens the boards instead of beading up, the old finish is gone and the wood is taking on moisture.
Rough, Splintering Boards
Dry, weathered wood gets rough underfoot. Sealing it keeps the surface smoother and nicer to walk on.
Mildew & Dark Spots
Shady, damp areas grow mildew that stains the wood. It has to be cleaned off before new stain goes on.
How Our Deck & Fence Staining Works
The same careful sequence on every deck and fence staining job, from the first walkthrough to the final review.
- Step 1
Inspect
We check the wood, what is on it now and how it is weathering, then recommend a stain.
- Step 2
Clean & Brighten
Dirt, mildew and gray fibers come off, and a brightener restores the natural tone of the wood.
- Step 3
Dry Out
The wood gets time to dry fully, because stain will not soak into damp boards.
- Step 4
Stain
Stain is worked into the boards, rails and end cuts for even color and protection.
- Step 5
Walkthrough
We look it over with you and let you know when it is ready for furniture and foot traffic.
Deck & Fence Staining FAQs
Answers to the questions homeowners ask most about deck and fence staining.
Most decks need fresh stain every two to three years, because the flat boards take direct sun and standing water. Fences and railings usually last longer between coats, and solid stains outlast transparent ones.
In the Mid-Atlantic, late spring through early fall is the usual window, on mild, dry days. Very hot, direct sun can make stain dry before it soaks in, and it needs a stretch of dry weather afterward to cure.
Most stains need at least a day of dry weather, and cool or humid conditions stretch that out. The forecast is checked before any staining starts, and work is pushed back if rain is on the way.
Transparent stain shows the most grain but needs recoating most often. Semi-transparent balances color and grain, and penetrating stains like these are usually the better choice for flat deck boards. Solid stain hides the grain and older wood and lasts longest on fences and railings, but on deck boards it can trap moisture and peel.
Not without removing the old coating, because a see-through stain cannot soak through it. The options are stripping the deck back to bare wood or recoating with another solid-color finish, and we will tell you which makes more sense.
The wood has to be clean, but more pressure is not better. Too much can gouge the boards and raise the grain. A cleaner and a gentler wash do the job, followed by time for the wood to dry.
Light foot traffic is usually fine after a day. Wait a couple of days before putting furniture and grills back, and longer when the weather is cool or humid.
Usually not. New pressure-treated lumber needs time to dry out before it will take stain, anywhere from several weeks to a few months. A simple test tells you: if drops of water soak in, the wood is ready.
